Education We Will Provide

Seeing Hamilton Together

As professors, we believe deeply in the power of a high quality education; however, an essential component of a high quality education is that it matches a child's needs and aspirations. A key part of choosing our home was knowing that it is in good school district that offers a quality education with many opportunities for a child to explore their interests. We know that involved parents are one of the strongest factors in student success and we plan to be engaged in classroom and school community activities.

We have a variety of interests we were able to explore growing up – band, drama, sports, science, math, languages, woodworking – and we would love to share these interests with the child and support them as they introduce us to their interests. We know that "education" goes beyond the school walls to include coaching and lessons in areas of interest and to trips to museums, concerts, and cultural events. Further, we have a home full of books we can't wait to share!

As the child grows, we will help them explore their interests and find the right path for them after high school. We believe that an education should match a person's interests and goals; thus, we would support the child in pursuing trade school and apprenticeships, associates, bachelor's, master's/professional, or doctoral degrees. We already have a savings plan to ensure that we can support an appropriate education for this child.

What It Means to Become Parents

We Can't Wait to Become Parents!

We have wanted to be parents for a long time and we are finally in a position to adopt. To us it means completing our family. We are excited to share in their interests, share the love and fun of our home, and share the wonders of the world. We are looking forward to introducing the child to our interests like music, woodworking, horseback riding, and baseball and helping them find their interests so we can learn about something new together. We love silly games and even sillier jokes and we think adding a child's laughter would make time spent together even more fun. We have both loved watching children explore their world and we look forward to exploring with this child. From the frogs and birds in our own backyard to national parks, from how numbers work to how people interact, and from the greatest stories ever told to the depths of our imaginations, we cannot wait to be there as this child grows up.

We also know it means a great deal of responsibility. It means, among other things, being emotionally mature and setting limits. We have had time as adults to work on our own emotional development and control and have been together long enough to learn how to balance each other's emotional strengths. As teachers, we are used to setting and enforcing reasonable limits and explaining their necessity. We know this is a skill that will come in handy when parenting.

Cultural Diversity

Within our families and friends, we already have a lot of cultural diversity. Katherine has two cousins who were adopted from Colombia as infants who have been very open about their experiences as children and now as adults. We have learned from her cousins the importance of keeping a child connected to their racial and ethnic heritage. Many of our friends have expressed support for our plans to adopt and have offered to share their culture with us as a family including: traditions, recipes, language, history, and celebrations. We already enjoy celebrating our friends' cultures with them and are eager to share these experiences with the child.

Additionally, we live just outside a major metropolitan area with several large universities with diverse populations of employees and students. This diversity leads to festivals, museums, celebrations, and organizations related to racial and ethnic identities. We are committed to helping the child explore their identity through these opportunities and to make friends with other children with whom they share identities or interests.

Katherine teaches social justice and leadership through a critical race theory lens. Because of this, we believe that our commitment to this child goes beyond connecting them to their racial or ethnic background. We are responsible for helping dismantle the systems that disadvantage people in order to create a better society for the child.

Our Extended Families

Jonathan & His Parents

We are lucky to live a few miles from Jonathan's parents and have Sunday night dinners with them. We all love cooking together and we alternate whose turn it is to make dinner — but the guests bring the dessert! Jonathan's mother loves reading and watching TV and his father enjoys puzzles and relaxing in the sun on their porch. In addition to cooking, when we get together with them we work on home improvement projects, play cards, and explore the area. Both of Jonathan's parents have great senses of humor, so there is always laughter when we are together.

Katherine & Her Mother at the State Fair

While Katherine's family lives farther away - 5-7 hour drives - when we get together with her mom and her brothers' families, we carry on long-held family traditions like Clue championship, dance off, making up silly songs, Lego building, and playing in the water. We are proud to have been declared "the most ridiculous people they know" by our nieces and nephew and defend that title against all challengers. Katherine writes a story with our nieces and nephew every year and has it made into a book for them for Christmas. She hopes this child will want to be a storyteller as well.

Everyone is excited to meet this child and have new teams for Clue.

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We live on nine acres with some neighbors, a few of which are young families. Because it's a farm road that dead ends just past our house, kids play and ride their bikes throughout the neighborhood. We keep our horse in the yard between the house and the woods! Our favorite room is the family room because of its wall of windows that let us watch the wildlife and its built in bookcase for all of our favorite stories. Whether we're watching baseball, reading, quilting, or chatting with friends, most of our evenings are spent in this room. Our bedroom, the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, pantry, and sunporch round out the first floor while the second floor holds two more bedrooms, a bathroom, and a home office/den.

Back of Our Home

Where we live is semi-rural and our yard is like a park with woods and creeks and plenty of room for a swingset! We are between two small towns and minutes from a major city so we have access to many parks, a cross-city trail network, and community and university sponsored festivals and museums.

From Us to You

Thank you for taking the time to consider us. Trusting someone else with your child is a difficult decision and we are so grateful that you are looking at us. We have both always intended to build our family through adoption – something we were thrilled to learn about each other early in our relationship – and hope that you will choose us. We intend to facilitate a relationship that is best for the child. This means we are committed to an in-person visit in the child's first five years and sending letters and pictures. We are also open to more contact including emails, phone calls, and in-person or virtual visits.

We are ready to welcome a child into our life and home. And while our profile can give you some insight into our home, we would like to take this opportunity to give you further insight into our life. We are both professors which provides a lot of flexibility in our schedule as well as an opportunity for a child to be immersed in the diversity of the campus community and events. We get to eat dinner together every night, enjoy weekends having family time, and we have guaranteed breaks that we can enjoy with our extended family. Our flexible schedules mean we will be able to participate in school functions, even those that happen during the day. It also means that we understand how to navigate the education system and maximize access to opportunities like camps and enrichment programs. True to his logical and analytical nature, Jonathan is Statistics Professor. Katherine is a Leadership professor with an emphasis on social justice and youth development. A big part of the reason we each went into teaching is because we enjoy working with young people and part of Katherine's work now is based on her previous work with young children.

We cherish the time we spend with our nieces and nephew and with our friends' kids of all ages. Whether we are playing games, doing arts and crafts, sharing in their hobbies, or reading bedtime stories, we love the chances we have to be in a child's world and to help them grow. With our group of local friends, all of our gatherings include the kids! At our regular game night with friends, we'll have groups playing Uno or Clue while others play Catan or role playing games. We love the buzz of families together.

We have been together since 2010 and married since 2015 and we are ready for our family to grow. We have a strong and loving relationship and even a year of being on lockdown together hasn't changed that. But we are missing a child to share our love and life with. We are ready for the complete parenting experience, from cuddles to curfew and diapers to diplomas.

We will cherish knowing that this child's birth parents chose us and that we can work together to build the best life possible for this child. We hope you will find a connection with us. We can't wait to meet you and be on this journey together.
